NPD Group, which charts consumer likes and dislikes for the restaurant industry, just weighed in on burgers. Burgers on buns, usually with cheese, are the most popular sandwich in the land. But a "billionaire" burger -- ground sirloin on a toasted baguette with garlic butter, steak sauce, and aged Cheddar, blue, or Gruyere -- came on strong out of nine concepts tested. Although fancy places feature lots of mini burgers, sometimes with foie gras, the NPD report says people like big burgers, at least in casual dining restaurants (as opposed to fast food). They also like cheese added, and are receptive to baguettes instead of buns. There's no denying the power of the burger, though. The report says 11 million more were eaten this year over last year at casual dining spots. No end to burger mania. Posted by Alison Arnett at 12:07 PM
