Private taste test (Part 2)

Several years ago, the Food section did a challah tasting to see which of these rich, cakey breads is the best in town.

Cheryl-Anns' of Brookline was the hands-down winner. I've been buying it ever since. The company sends breads to A. Russo's in Watertown and several other locations. It's a sweet, almost sticky dough.

I bought one recently (that's it on the left) and tasted it beside a challah from Hi-Rise Bread Company. Hi-Rise's entry (on the right) was not nearly as yellow at Cheryl-Anns', nor as sticky or sweet or cakey. I far preferred Hi-Rise's. It had depth and loads of flavor and tasted like you imagine challah tasted when grandmothers made it in the old country.
