« Last hurrahs | Main | Burger, burger, burger » Tuesday, September 5, 2006Verdant VermontIf you wait until the end of August to take a vacation, as I did, there are rewards. We headed off to rural western Vermont near the New York line after the Green Mountain state had been deluged with rain. It looked like a golf course with peaks and valleys. En route, we stopped at the Brattleboro farmers' market (watch for a Food section story on this); the house we rent has a wonderful kitchen and anyway, it's a long drive to a restaurant. Second stop: Someday Farm in Dorset, where Matt and Scout raise their own chickens. These were headed for the grill and they're as good as chickens get. Just add grilled bread topped with ripe native tomatoes and an ear of plump corn. Wait until the end of August, go to God's country, and you're bound to have a great vacation.
