Let's hear it for pierogies

newperogy.jpg

This just in!! -- (well, actually, the news came last week but I'm just getting around to reading it): Buffalo, N.Y., has snatched the prize as the "Capital of the Pierogy Pocket."

What's that? you might ask. Mrs. T's Pierogies offered a prize for the city that was most enthusiastic about pierogies, those potato-stuffed dumplings popular in Poland and other Eastern European cuisines. Buffalo declared last Aug. 25 Pierogy Pride Day, which included a pierogy cook-off and a pierogy toss. City officials did a video set to an original song and campaigned hard for the pierogy honor, and garnered a $10,000 prize to use for community projects.

The only New England city to rate an honorable mention was Providence. All we can say is "Push pierogy pride, Providence." Maybe next year will be yours.
