Kraft Foods has just been sued by a Los Angeles woman, a veteran plaintiff in such suits, for having almost no guacamole in its guacamole dip. LA Times writer Jerry Hirsch says the label on the jars lists the ingredients -- coconut and soybean oils, food coloring (to make it green), and modified food starch with a dollop of 2 percent guacamole. But the suit alleges fraud because the dip is called guacamole and a consumer might reasonably expect avocados as the main ingredient. A company spokesman thinks consumers are just fooling themselves if they expect real vegetables. "We think customers understand that it isn't made from avocado." But Kraft is worried enough to plan to change the label to call it "guacamole-flavored." That statement is amazing. Do manufacturers think consumers believe that coconut and soybean oil whipped with food coloring have the same nutrients as an avocado? My advice: Buy two avocados, let them ripen, and whir them in a food processor with a peeled clove of garlic, some sprigs of fresh cilantro, and a generous squeeze of lime juice. Voila: guacamole. It only takes minutes. It takes about the same amount of time you need to read the label on an "avocado-flavored" dip.
