Brooklyn in a box?

pizza3.jpg

The other night, for the first time, I saw the commercial for Domino's new "Brooklyn Style Pizza." I laughed out loud. What does that even mean? There's just no way a Domino's pie is ever going to approach those of Grimaldi's, Di Fara, Totonno's, et al. If Domino's is actually trying to do so, well, kudos to the chain that brings tomato-and-cheese-coated cardboard into millions of homes all over the nation. If people in Nebraska now get to eat vaguely more New Yorkish pizza, it's only for the good.

Then, yesterday, the New York Times ran this great piece on it, in which they bring a Domino's "Brooklyn Style" pie into actual Brooklyn pizzerias. An excerpt:

"'Get that thing out of here,' was the first thing Totonno’s owner, Louise Ciminieri, said when she saw the Domino’s box."

Brilliant.

The website sliceny.com also weighs in amusingly.

Now I'm dying for a real cheese slice. Maybe I'll take a gamble this weekend and head to New York.
