Anti-Rachael Rayers

rachaelray.jpg

The story in last Sunday's New York Times magazine about the group who dislikes Rachael Ray, which is fueled by the website LiveJournal, is getting around. The anti-RR members are using the name Raytard, says Rob Walker's story in his "Consumed" column.

So what is there to say about a woman whose favorite word is Yum-o? She's not the thinking girl's cook, like my heroine, Lidia Bastianich.

She's not a talented, do-good chef, like Jamie Oliver.

And her humor around food and in the kitchen isn't as outrageously delightful as Amy Sedaris.

But consider this: Rachael Ray may not have a solid culinary background, may not know much about other cultures and their cuisines, and may not have much depth. But she just may be swinging a lot of people away from fast food and into the kitchen. You can't bash that.
