A welcome sight at Pops

felino.jpg

Going to a brand-new restaurant is both exciting and a little unnerving. It's fun to be on the edge, yet so much can go wrong. Last night, we came in out of the bitter cold wind to Pops, a newbie less than a week old, on Tremont Street.

The neighborhood had already found Felino Samson's little jewel, in the space that last held Perdix. Blackand white filigreed patterns on the walls, a cool vibe in the music, and a full house the night after Valentine's -- a pretty good start for Samson, who previously was the chef of Bomboa, in the first restaurant of his own.

The theme is comfort food, and the elephant garlic soup with shrimp was just that, along with an interesting deconstructed Cobb salad and a chicken stew. But the best part was seeing Samson working away in the tiny open kitchen, warming up a frigid night.
