Eating around the globe

Americans like to eat out when they travel. Well, duh, you might say. You've got to eat, after all. But a Travel Industry Association study that was cosponsored by the National Restaurant Association both states the obvious and elaborates.

Culinary tourism is the study's focus. One-quarter of all leisure travelers, the study says, report food is central to their destination selection, and more than twice that for those who are concentrating on culinary travel. Eight-five percent of those liked trying new restaurants every night of a trip, the study says.

And of all leisure travels, 17 percent or about 27.3 million people take part in food and wine activities when they travel. It's just more evidence that we don't just eat to live, but we live to eat -- even on the road.
