Just the food, please

The last few years have seen a proliferation of vitamins -- popped as pills, added to bottled water, even recently touted as a healthful additive to coffee. It seemed as though food was old news, as advertisements blared on about getting nutrients when you didn't have time -- or the inclination -- to eat.

A new study in the Journal of American Medicine puts that notion right where it should be -- out. Most vitamin supplements don't prolong life, the study says, even though Americans are spending $2.3 billion a year on them. Some may, in fact, be detrimental to health.

And, as should have been apparent from the first, the study says the best way to ingest vitamins is by eating food. Eat that orange, nibble on green vegetables, and save money while you're at it. Now how sensible is that?
