« Must be the chicken wings | Main | "86" the foie » Tuesday, March 20, 2007This proves I'm not Irish
This slightly unappetizing mixture is melted butter, which isn't a key ingredient of Irish soda bread, but then you wouldn't want to eat a soda bread without fat. Early Sunday morning, I was baking breads for my terrific neighbors -- John Bartley, the mayor of our street, and Mikey Morash, who comes over with his truck to plow out his mother, and does our driveway and Mr. Bartley's while he's there. I had the batter for two big soda breads in one of my largest mixing bowls. It was filled with golden raisins and dark ones, stirred with buttermilk, and I was eagerly anticipating the lovely smell. Just when I had cut the crosses on top of the loaves and was about to slip them into the oven, I noticed the melted butter on the burner. Instead of putting them into the oven, I slipped the breads into the trash. If I had told Mr. Bartley what I'd done, he would have yelled at me for throwing them out. (He yells about everything!) When I have a few minutes on another weekend, I'll bake them something else. Scones, I think. I can make them with my eyes closed. Posted by Sheryl Julian at 05:51 PM
