One of my favorite comic strips (yes, I read the comics daily) is Non Sequitur by Wiley, who has a wry wit. One old strip thumbtacked above my desk shows a motley clutch of people holding darts; on the other side of the frame is a board marked "Today I am an expert in:" with subjects such as "politics, county fairs, aerospace, liposuction." You get the idea. Even food assignments can be like that. Last week, I researched eggs for "All they're cracked up to be" in April 4's Food section. I found out a lot about eggs, including how to better appreciate them. I also discovered that many other people also are curious about eggs -- in fact, that seems to be the only topic my husband wants to discuss now. And although I'm always in favor of cage-free, organic, sustainably raised, and local, I'm amazed that I'm about to go out to South End Formaggio to try to snap up their special organically-raised Wicken Fen eggs from Topsham, Vt. Only $8.95 for six! But Formaggio's Valerie Gurdal assures me they're well worth it. I'll keep you posted. Now that I'm an expert, that is. Posted by Alison Arnett at 03:00 PM
