The next time you head into Davis Square on a weekend night, blithely expecting to walz into a table at Redbones -- don't. Some friends and I, though we should know better, did this recently and found ourselves looking at an hour-and-a-half wait. We left the chaotic din that is Redbones at 8:30 on Saturday night and headed down Elm Street, desperately looking for a place we could eat before we fainted. But everywhere that appealed to us -- Gargoyle's, Diva, Out of the Blue -- was jammed. Just past the Rosebud, we spotted the sign for La Spina. It's tucked behind the diner, which might be why it's an oasis of calm in an otherwise crazy square. Walk past a spacious, horseshoe-shaped bar into the stylishly casual dining room, and you might hear an Italian crooner on the sound system, but La Spina isn't kitschy. We enjoyed being able to sit down immediately, the food was good (the fried calamari appetizer was near great: the ringlets tender and the breading light and not overcooked), and then we ordered tiramisu for dessert. The tiramisu fanatic with us moaned like Meg Ryan in the restaurant scene from "When Harry Met Sally" as he savored bite after bite. La Spina's version is a perfect blend of flavors and textures: The lady fingers are soft but not soggy, the mascarpone is creamy and sweet, the chocolate deep and velvety, and the coffee and liquor flavors don't overwhelm everthing else. I might not be eating dinner in Davis Square again anytime soon, but I've already been back to La Spina for tiramisu. Posted by Ann Cortissoz at 09:25 AM
