A mower for your corn rows

cornstripper.jpg

Oxo's new corn stripper moves up the ear of corn like a lawnmower over your grass, catching the kernels in a half-cup container.

It's cute enough, but a paring knife works beautifully. Lay the cob on a cutting board, use a paring knife to cut off several rows of kernels, then set the cob flat side down on the board, and cut another row.

The real nuisance of fresh corn is shucking. At my farmstand, you can shuck the corn after you buy it. They get the compost, and your kitchen floor isn't covered with silk.

I think I'll make corn salad this weekend.
