My new favorite cookies

These are ciambelle, a ring cookie from Rome. Last Spring, Cambridge writer Judith Barrett wrote a series for the Food section on the food of Rome and ended with these little sweets. I clipped the recipe and didn't have a chance to make them until I had a long week off. They contain olive oil, red wine, sugar, and flour. There was something relaxing about having nothing to do except roll out little strands of dough and turn them into rings that I made the recipe six times.

After baking, they're very crisp, not terribly sweet (even with their sugary coating), and small enough so you don't feel awful about nibbling several. I decided to try them with white wine, too. Here's the pale version:
