NEW YORK—Shares of major media companies closed mixed on Monday after the Audit Bureau of Circulations reported that circulation fell sharply at most top U.S. newspapers, except for Gannett Co.'s USA Today and The Wall Street Journal.
Gannett shares rose 78 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $28.62. News Corp. shares fell 20 cents to $18.13. News Corp. bought the Journal's parent company Dow Jones & Co. last December.
Also Monday, newspaper operator A.H. Belo Corp. reported a first-quarter loss and warned that sales declines would likely continue throughout 2008. A.H. Belo shares rose 6 cents to $10.21.

New York Times Co., down 57 cents, or 2.7 percent, to $20.31.
Walt Disney Co., up 7 cents to $32.43.
Time Warner Inc., down 15 cents to $15.11.
