NEW YORK—Major media companies' shares mostly gained Thursday morning, as some positive retail sales results and a larger-than-expected drop in the number of unemployment claims helped offset worries about soaring energy prices.

On Wednesday, oil prices surged to a record of nearly $124, which drove the Dow Jones industrial average down by more than 200 points.

Here's how shares of some major media companies were trading Thursday morning:

News Corp., up 48 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $19.68.

New York Times, up 12 cents to $19.51.

Viacom Inc., up 54 cents to $38.88.

Time Warner Inc., up 14 cents to $16.08.

Bucking the trend, Walt Disney Co. shares fell 11 cents to $34.59.
