MONTPELIER, Vt.—An award-winning journalist told a Vermont audience that the downfall of the newspaper industry does not bode well for democracy.

Anthony Marro, who's been a reporter at The New York Times and editor at Newsday, spoke Saturday at the Vermont chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union's annual conference.

Marro said the Internet, which is largely blamed for newspapers' collapse, could offer a new business structure to support the kind of substantive reporting that the First Amendment was conceived to provide.

But he said the decrease in reporters and resources has altered the quality and quantity of information available to the public. Marro said it's unclear whether the diminished newsrooms around the country will sound the death knell for the press.

Marro's career began at the Rutland Herald.
