'Lost in Translation' was the one true masterpiece I saw this year; with its breathtaking honesty and a performance by Bill Murray that has to be seen to be believed.

Daniel, Yorktown, NY

Of those I've seen (and I've missed both good and bad this year):

Best: The Return of the King, hands down.

Close Seconds: Master & Commander, Stone Reader

Very good: Whale Rider, Bend it Like Beckham, Pirates of the Carribean, X-Men2, Italian Job, Frida

Overrated: The Last Samarai

Painful to Remember and Embaressed to Admit I've seen: Tomb Raider 2 (ugh!), The two Matrix movies (zzzz), Hulk

Review This fantastic movie is a one of a kind never to be replaced. But still, it can't even compete with the first installment of the Lord of the Rings,"The Fellowship of the Ring," which was unbelieveably amazing. Both the Two Towers and the Return of the King way overdid it with the whole Liv Tyler thing, especially since she wasn't even mentioned in the entire second book by J.R.R Tolkien! The ending battle and scene(s) of The Return of the King should have been more dramatic, big, and climatic, which it wasn't.

Arwen, Rivendell

Whale Rider is the surprise film of the year. A great story done remarkably well.

Roy , Jamaica Plain

Best Movie: Mystic River (if Sean Penn doesn't win for this then he never will!)

Worst Movie: Gigli (I am so sick of Bennifer!)

Kelly, Billerica

Avoided most of the bombs, but I did see LOVE ACTUALLY and hated it--cloying, cynical, and manipulative. And I usually love the Brits!

Best: Master and Commander. Great story telling, with vivid action scenes. Russell Crowe was fantastic.

OK: The Last Samuri. Somewhat of a "Dances with Wolves" ripoff. Saw this after "Master and Commander," and I found myself constantly comparing the two movies. It just didn't match up to "M&C". Maybe if I had seen Samuri first, I would have appreciated it more.

Somewhat Overrated: LOTR, Return of the King. I enjoyed it, but the 45 min ending almost killed it for me. Blah, Blah, Blah, with about 5 "endings"...enough!

Worst: Didn't see any "bad" movies at the theater, but saw "From Dusk to Dawn" on HBO. Yikes! What the hell was that about??

John, Langley AFB, VA

Best Picture: The Last Samurai - excellent story about honor

Worst Picture (That I actually saw): Kill Bill - Quentin should not be allowed within 100 feet of a movoe set ever again!

Joseph, Chestnut Hill
