OK, I don't know all the movies I would include. But here are a few (I try to see one movie every week) that stood out for various reasons:

1. Raising Victor Vargas - This is one of those films that focuses on the lives of teens. If Hollywood had made this they would have cast "name-brand" actors/actresses in their late twenties. Thankfully that didn't happen. This movie avoids a lot of teen cliches in favor of a simple story and a great eye for authentic people and places.

2. Return of the King - A spectacle that lives up to the hype. I'm really impressed that Peter Jackson was able to cram so much of the book's details into the film without it feeling bloated. Once again, in the hands of someone else this could have been a major disappointment.

3. Kill Bill vol 1. - The return of Tarantino. Violent, humourous, and just a whole lot of fun.

4. 28 Days Later - Nice to see director Danny Boyle take the zombie-genre and give it a fresh spin. Once again, its not a work of art, but its a fun ride.

5. Winged Migration - A documentary on the migration of birds that takes the viewer on a ride into the sky. Fantastic camera work and no special effects. Beautiful.

And now for the dogs:

1. The Real Cancun - Dull. Lots of hype, no delivery.

2. God and Generals - Lots and lots of speaches. Very dull.

3. SWAT - A mediocre summer action flick so chock full of cliches that I demanded my money and the 90 minutes of my life back. Didn't get either by the way.

4. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - A travesty compared to the excellent comic book it was based on. Plus, the CGI on a budget just stands out - and not in a good way.

5. Duplex - It was the opposite of funny.

By the way, I don't know anyone who saw actually Gigli, so why is everyone here putting it down on their list for worst film of 2003? Think for yourselves people! Don't just tell us its the worst because other people say it is!

Best - LOTR: Return of the King, by a landslide! Peter Jackson deserves the utmost respect and recognition for a trilogy that not only captured our attention, but actually sustained and GAINED attention...over the course of 3 years!! The cast and crew, special effects, costumes, props and sets, musical score, and direction came together perfectly to create one of the most inspirational stories of our time. They made us believe. I sincerely hope the academy can see past this film's "fantasy" status, and give it the recognition it so deserves.
