Favorite spy show

Matthew Gilbert writes: "Let's get real. Sure, '24' is the CIA drama that gets all the buzz, but 'Alias,' so audacious and so plastic fantastic, is really the bee's knees."

It's pretty clear where Matthew's loyalties lie. Now we want to know what you think. Which spy show delivers the goods, and why do you like it so much?

ALIAS! HANDS DOWN! Aside from the amazing Jennifer Garner, who can single-handely carry "Alias" and make it better than a show such as "24", I think that the supporting cast is what puts Alias above and beyond, in a league of its own. I.ll just write about my two favorites. Starting with the actor's actor, Victor Garber, as Jack Bristow, my favorite line is when Jack says these five words, "I'll take care of it." Jack is always placing his daughter, Sydney, and her safety as his top priority, so when he says those five words, you just have to love Spy Daddy. When Jack goes in action, (something very rare but so hilarious when it happens . because in real life Victor Garber hates doing action scenes and would never hurt a fly), it's just so thrilling to see Jack do anything he needs to protect Sydney. I don't know how many people Jack has framed and/or killed to save Sydney, by hacking into the SD-6 mainframe and risking his own life to alter transmission records, by threatening and killing that CIA prick Haladki in season one, or in last week's episode, personally traveling to Mexico to kill an informant who would have blown the mystery of who killed the Russian diplomat Andrian Lazarey (which is of course Sydney Bristow). But I just have to conclude about Spy Daddy that his most classic line as of recent is when Jack meets Sloane (Ron Rifkin) for the first time since Jack was released from solitary confinement. Jack questions Sloane, "Should I take this as your official denial in any involvement in Sydney's disappearance? (Sloane nods) Then you've just made the worst mistake of your life, because I'm going to bury you." And not to mention the young but talented 22-year old David Anders (from Oregon of all places) . his character, Mr. Sark has a British accent and supposedly has origins from Wales / Ireland, the character by the name of Mr. Sark is completely different from the man who plays him, yet his acting is so believable. Always being in control of his surroundings, Mr. Sark (whose first name I'm dying to know) devilishly is always cool, calm, and overly polite. His vocabulary-rich sentences, his syntax, and his use of sarcasm is so well crafted in each episode's dialogue that it makes me think that Sark is the best character (in terms of dialogue) on Alias. Just watch and listen - he's so manipulative, but so polite! What a villain! And with the kicker that his favorite wine is a Chateau Petrus 1982, a reference that has been made twice so far in three seasons of Alias, Sark is just the coolest upscale and polite villain you'll ever meet. So with such a great cast (I am yet to begin to talk about Sloane, evil Francie, Dixon, or even Vaughn) and of course the all-talented Jennifer Garner, who not only can change outfits every two minutes, overcome any obstacle but also be so emotional (and be able to cry on cue - which makes the show so believable) the quality of the characters on Alias is what makes it the best show on TV. With a roller coaster of emotions, plot twists every few episodes, and mind-blowing cliffhangers at the end of almost every episode, it is that combination of action, drama, outstanding dialogues, and the constant manipulation among characters and story lines that makes this show so smart and on such a higher level than any other of its kind. So ending with the humor of Marshall (Kevin Weisman), the former SD-6 and now CIA op-tech gadget guy, who is always cracking jokes, comments, anecdotes, and other babblings, especially in preparing his drum solo / marriage proposal to Carrie Bowman: You're the micro in my chip, The giga in my byte, I think about you Carrie, Every morning noon and night Morning noon, and night. Carrie, We had Sushi. I'll protect you, can't you see? Carrie, marry me. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. (It.s my new favorite song.) Now go watch Alias (Sundays 9PM ET on ABC) or buy season one on DVD NOW and season two on DVD (in stores December 2nd)! Thanks for reading. -Mikey W. Framingham, MA

"Alias," because it grabs and holds one all the way through. "24" is good, although this year seems slower, and I, too. don't like that they went 3 years forward with no closure from the stuff they left hanging from the end of last year's plotlines. And certainly not least, they need to off Kim and bring back the interesting characters, like Nina and Sherry.

You can _like_ like 'em both, just at different times. I'm a fan of both. Alias is total fantasy on so many levels, 24 appeals to something darker.

Matthew is wrong. 24 is much more enjoyable to watch. Alias, which I admit I don't watch regularly, is too fluffy and I don't invest any energy watching it. But 24 sucks you in and the intensity demands you tune in every week to see what happens next. There is a pretty good spy show on A/E BBC which is sort of like Alias - I think its called M!-5. For some reason I always enjoy British shows more than American shows.

Alias ---By FAR. I was watching both shows, but I have gotten bored with 24 and Alias is just getting better and better. Your totally correct about the acting. It is crisp and engaging on Alias and has gotten predictable and stale on 24. Alias is the one show on TV that gets my vote for the most entertaining hour of Television. The cast is wonderful and play together as no other show. Jennifer Garner is consistantly wonderful and believable every week. Go JJ Abrams for keeping us on the edg of our seat!!!

I have been a loyal fan of Alias from the very beginning and I love it. I look forward to it on Sunday nights. I find the show entertaining, exciting and just love all the different characters. Jennifer Gardner is simply amazing, so is the rest of the cast. I can't wait for the return of Irina "the mom". Crazy plots, fancy outfits and gadgets, lots of fun. I am addicted and hope the show is around for quite a while.

I watch both, but Alias is my favorite by a long shot.

Alias is by far the best spy show on TV. Not only is there a great plot line, but there is amazing action, fight scenes, a love triangle, and throw in beautiful Jennifer Garner and all her outfits and wigs and it's the total package!
