Oscar night
Hollywood's biggest night has come and gone. What is your take on the show? Did anyone or any performances standout? Did you like Billy Crystal as the show's host? Did your favorites win? Did anyone win that you feel didn't deserve the award? Let Boston.com know what you thought.
Page 3 Subdued wasn't it? Everyone, everything, very low key. joan, South Casco ME BOOORRRIINNNGGGG! Pete, Gloucester A pretty boring night as Oscar played it safe. It would have been nice to have something interesting happen, like a strange outfit or a controversial comment. The most interesting moment was the Triplets of Bellevile song with the guy drumming on the bicycle, which must have seemed strange for people who haven't seen the movie. And can we please dump the scripted "conversations" between co-presenters? Once in a while they were good, but mostly they were just phoning it in and the jokes just fell flat. Paul, Brookline While watching the oscars on television, I noticed It was an amature effort to broadcast the show. The show itself was entertaining enough. Every time the clip of the nominated film, or even the tribute clips were shown, all of the titles were not visible or were partially cut off the television. This should be automatic for any production company to keep all information in the "safe area" meaning where the television screen is smaller than the computer editing area. I think any home video person with a PC could have noticed the hack job if they simply previewed the shows' clips on a television before it was broadcast world-wide. Jay Jay, Boston The Oscars is not exactly about talent. Why was Speilberg waiting for many years before he won? Why did Denzel Washington won two years ago? It's not a true measure of talents. Take this year, was Renee Z better than Marcia Gay Harden or was it the fact that Renee was not a winner for Chicago last year? Donal, Cambridge Now don't get me wrong, I liked LOTR as much as the next dork, but there is no way this film should have won best picture, best adapted screenplay and numerous of the other thousand awards it won. The film was 50% blurred digital battle scenes. Its nice that the Academy is trying to stretch into other genres by recognizing this fantasy (and by nominating Depp for his work in a formulaic comedy) but the other films nominated for best picture were clearly better films; maybe not better movies, but easily better films. I'm betting that the Academy didnt really want to give it to LOTR but did so largely because of the technical achievement of the trilogy and the sheer nhumber of people employed by the films. As an industry how could they not recognize it? Nevertheless, the fact that both Mystic River and Lost in Translation achieved so much more with so much less should have been cause to give the award to either of those films. What those films achieved with much less than LOTR is exactly the qualities of film that the Academy usually recognizes. They both shed light on human nature in a new and fresh way and in the process revealed ourselves; that is the power of cinema, not just the marriage of digital artistry with meticulous set design. Ned, JP BILL MURRAY GOT SCREWED! Richie, Plymouth, MA I usually love the Oscars, but after last night I'm beginning to think that any movie that receives a certain # of nominations should just receive a "Masterpiece" award and let the other movies duke it out, especially if there was noone in the movie nominated for individual acting honors. However, I think that there are a few people who need thanks who didn't receive any.... I'd like to congratulate Sean Penn and thank him for proving that all actors do need a good writer after hearing that acceptance speach. I'd like to thank Tom Cruise for getting a freakin haircut and Jonny Depp for not coming to the Oscars looking like the offspring of Boy George and Capn' Crunch. I'd like to congratulate Tim Robbins for winning the Best Supporting actor award while putting on the worst Bostonian accent since Jeff Bridges in "Blown Away" and last but not least I'd like to thank Lord of the Rings Academy award winning director Peter Jackson for making me look like an a greek GOD just by standing next to him. Sean , South Boston I'm really happy that the awards went to who they did, but that couldn't disguise the fact that last night's show was a brutal bore. How much so? I kept switching the channel to watch "Star Wars: Episode One" and found myself enjoying that much more than the Oscars. Then again, what type of awards ceremony would one expect from the man also responsible for the dismal movie "America's Sweethearts"? sf, Melrose Is it me or was Julia Roberts sporting a Sarah-Jessica Parker look? What was that all about? Scott, Windham, NH
