Regina Carter: Paganini - After a Dream

Alan, Concord, ma

2003 was a solid year for music, here's what I liked
'hail to the thief' - radiohead
'up the bracket' - the libertines (in US)
'freak in' - dave douglas
'hearts of oak' - ted leo & the pharmacists
'keep on your mean side' - the kills
'room on fire' - the strokes
'up all night' - john scofield band
'world without tears' - lucinda williams
'worldwide underground' - erykah badu
'elephant' - white stripes
'life, love and leaving' - detroit cobras
'beneath this gruff exterior' - john hiatt
'these are the vistas' - the bad plus
'fever to tell' - yeah yeah yeah's

Of them all I would say the radiohead, libertines, strokes & ted leo discs are my favorites.

Donnie, Norton

I only bought one brand new cd this year and it was an independently released gospel album by Nancy Bilonda called Fall Deep. It was excellent from start to finish.

"Fiends of Dope Island" by the Cramps

Pearl Jam: "Riot Act"
The Strokes: "Room on Fire"
The White Stripes: "Elephant"
Radiohead: "Hail to the Theif"
Outkast: "SpeakerBox.."

As a collector of over 1,200 CDs, I can honestly say that nothing in 2003 impressed me much. Top 40 radio sunk to even lower depths with the banality of 50 Cent, the shameless harlot Britney Spears, and the audio assault of American Idol (Justin, Kelly, and that dork Clay). Even 20-year veteran Madonna disappointed with her joyless "American Life" album. CD sales continued to dip but the music inductry blames it on the Internet. What could be the real reason why CD sales are down is the fact that the quality of today's music pales miserably when compared to 20 or even 10 years ago. That said, I spent much of 2003 revisiting CDs from earlier artists like Miles Davis, Bob Marley, the Smiths, Marvin Gaye, and John Coltrane.

Rich, Jamaica Plain

I enjoyed the releases of a few local bands like Apollo Sunshine. As for major releases, who can deny the power of the White Stripes. I'm also a fan of Coldplay. I wouldn't necessarily say their latest is a great album - but its got some great songs on it.

Rembrandt, Newton

A Perfect Circle's "Thirteenth Step". It is in my car CD player more than any other disc I have. Despite its sometimes dark images it is a very moving album, and it makes you think. Of course there is the somewhat creepy tune "The Nurse Who Loved Me", which is just plain fun to listen to and lightens the mood a bit.
