A coming-of-age comedy-drama set on Buzzards Bay, “The Way, Way Back” is a minor pleasure rather than a major work. But minor pleasures have their place, especially in summertime, and this one goes down like a popsicle on a hot day.
The cast is worth a look: Liam James plays a crushingly awkward teenager whose divorced mother (Toni Collette) brings him to the summer cottage of her new boyfriend (Steve Carell); the kid gets lessons in living from Sam Rockwell as the motormouthed slacker king of the local water park (played by Water Wizz in East Wareham).
Writer-directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash keep it moving genially if not always freshly, and Carell’s very good in a change-of-pace role as a jerk. Full story for BostonGlobe.com subscribers.
