8. Mark Wahlberg -- ‘The Departed’
Even in a loaded cast that included marquee names like DiCaprio, Damon, and Baldwin, Staff Sergeant Dignam, stole the show. In a role that rivaled his starring turn as Dirk Diggler in “Boogie Nights,” Mark Wahlberg embraced his Dorchester roots with relish, slinging scathing one-liners (“I’m the guy who does his job. You must be the other guy.”) and demoralizing repartee in his brazen Southie dialect. As one of the few unblemished cops fighting Frank Costello’s all-encompassing mafia infiltration, this silver-tongued meathead is an absolute force of wise-ass ire. Rumors persist that there will be a sequel to “The Departed” — since Scorsese’s film is based on the “Infernal Affairs” trilogy — and we should all hope that comes to fruition, if only for two more hours of Dignam’s searing, expletive-tinged zingers.
