Featured reviews

'Sherlock Holmes'
Robert Downey Jr. brings his brain, his wit, and his gift for intelligent underplaying, even as he understands he has been hired to play Sherlock Holmes, action hero.

'Nine'
While Chicago won the best-picture Oscar and rekindled enthusiasm for movie musicals, Nine is full of the director's same mistakes.

'It's Complicated'
Its Complicated unleashes an unabashedly, desperately romantic side of Alec Baldwin that we havent seen before.

'Le Combat Dans L'ile'
The combat in Alain Cavaliers 1962 Le Combat Dans Lile involves a gun duel on a country marsh. Its long in arriving but worth the wait.

'Broken Embraces'
The films emotional climax involves two hands caressing a projected image. Its both ridiculous and ridiculously romantic, which is an apt description of a work shaped like a heart and structured like a pretzel.

'A Single Man'
There are three professionals and one amateur at work in A Single Man, but only one of the four really matters. The first professional is the late Christopher Isherwood, upon whose novel the movie is based.

'The Young Victoria'
This film's lavishly appointed tosh that very effectively dramatizes the growing love between Victoria and her first cousin and eventual husband, and turns distracted and busy whenever it deals with history.

‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel’
'Squeakquel' offers the same mixture as before: live-action humans and computer-animated chipmunks.
‘Avatar’
Out of body experience: It’s easy to get lost in the visually spectacular world of director James Cameron’s movie.- Will viewers see 3-D ‘Avatar’ as it was meant to be seen?

‘Did You Hear About the Morgans?’
Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker stand around as if they're waiting for someone to yell, "Cut." He's in one movie. She's in another. Neither is any good.

‘The Princess and the Frog’
The movie forces Princess Tiana into the same conundrum that every Disney heroine faces: the marriage fantasy. She puts up a fuss, but it's no use.

‘Up in the Air’
George Clooney stars in Jason Reitman's movie about corporate downsizing and luxury business travel.- Photos Cold-hearted corporate execs redeemed on screen
