Inspired lunacy at its most frenetic. Fresh from "The Last Picture Show," director Peter Bogdanovich continued his ascent with this salute to vintage screwball comedies. This was a gargantuan hit in 1972, and it's no wonder. Barbra Streisand is at her best, exhibiting flawless timing as a walking tsunami stalking stuffy musicologist Ryan O'Neal (doing a very pale Cary Grant). Setting off the stars is a gallery of sublime character actors including Madeline Kahn in a memorable debut as O'Neal's frumpy fiance and Liam Dunn as an irascible, pill-popping judge. From Streisand's sizzling rendition of "You're the Top" over the main titles to a frenzied chase sequence that still ranks as one of the best, it's all the right kind of crazy. 5:15 p.m., 9:30 p.m. $9.50, $7.50 students. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge. 617-876-6837. brattlefilm.org![]()
