The long and shorts of it

Globe Staff / December 13, 2007

Suicide is obviously not a funny subject, but the witty dialogue and uplifting moments in Anne Continelli's and Deb Malone's "Absent Meaning" still lead to laughter. At "Indie Short Film Night: World Premiere of Absent Meaning" you'll meet Sventlana, a forlorn waitress-turned-punk-rocker, whose torn suicide-note fragments are served around the diner where she works. Also screening are Alice Stone's dark comedy "Expired" and Travis Johns's "It's For Her" about a couple's lack of communication. The local filmmakers will participate in a Q&A after the screenings, which are presented by Twenty American Dollars, a new Boston-based independent film company. 9:30-11:30 p.m. $5 (includes complimentary beer and wine). Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline. 617-734-9507. coolidge.org
