As you know, the Hub became something of a Hollywood backlot in 2007, with eight movies shot in and around the city. That's not too shabby, considering that few films have ever been made in Massachusetts. And all you aspiring extras shouldn't shelve your headshots just yet. The folks at the revitalized Massachusetts Film Office swear that 2008 could be even busier. "If even a fraction of the projects that are circling actually land to work here," says state film czar Nick Paleologos, "then it will be an even bigger year." Here then is a list of the films that are eyeing an '08 start date.

Production crews are already here, setting up shop in South Boston's Seaport District.

School principal has big-screen ambitions
One guy who's hoping Hollywood hangs around for a while is Kevin McCormick, an assistant elementary school principal in Medford. McCormick has serious big-screen ambitions after working on "Real Men Cry," the South Boston-based drama starring Ethan Hawke, Mark Ruffalo, and Amanda Peet. "There was a casting notice up at my gym in Wakefield," says the amateur actor, who works with 500 kids at Roberts Elementary School. "They were looking for a musclehead type, so I read for it and got it." (In the movie, which wrapped last week, McCormick's character gets into a fight while trying to score steroids.) Not satisfied with just a taste of Tinseltown, McCormick says he's signed up to take acting classes and speech classes. "I'm not going to disrespect the craft by saying I could do this full time," he says. "But I do have confidence enough to do it."

O'Brien drops in before return of 'Late Night'
Brookline native Conan O'Brien, who returns to the airways next week, was back in town briefly for the holidays. On hiatus since the writers' strike, the talk show host was strolling down Newbury Street the other day clutching a couple of Loro Piana bags. O'Brien, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, and, maybe, David Letterman will resume their shows Wednesday.
