March 10, 2008

Although it was universally panned by critics, the action-adventure saga "10,000 B.C." was the top film in North American theaters this weekend, collecting $35.7 million in ticket sales. Among other new releases, "College Road Trip," starring Raven Symone and Martin Lawrence, was second with $14 million, according to estimates available yesterday. "Vantage Point" was third with $7.5 million. "Semi-Pro," starring Will Ferrell as the owner of a professional basketball team, dropped to fourth from first with sales of $5.75 million. "The Bank Job" opened in fifth with $5.71 million in receipts. The movie, starring Jason Statham, is based on the real-life story of robbers who raided safe-deposit boxes in a London bank. Clooney takes barbs
What do you do when Donald Trump pokes fun at your height and Fabio threatens to beat you up? If you're George Clooney (inset), you take it all in stride - and make a couple jokes, of course. The "Michael Clayton" star, 46, agreed to a good-natured "Googling" session in the April issue of Esquire magazine, and in it he's asked about a laundry list of recent rumors about him - including his reported run-in with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter pitchman Fabio, People.com reports. When asked about his alleged feud with Fabio last fall (in which the model said he could beat Clooney up), the actor responds, "Yeah, that's probably true. He's a big guy. There is a moment when you are actually in the argument and you're thinking, 'If I do get beaten down by Fabio, that will be far worse than the pain. I wouldn't shake that.' "

Tenor Heppner out
Tenor Ben Heppner will miss today's opener of the Metropolitan Opera's highly anticipated revival of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" because of a virus. Heppner and soprano Deborah Voigt, two of the world's leading Wagnerian singers, were slated to sing "Tristan" together for the first time, and the six-performance New York run is close to sold out. Heppner was replaced by John Mac Master. (AP)

Stewart hosts again
After being surrounded by the dramatic heavyweight stars of the Oscars, Jon Stewart will play host again, this time amid a bevy of comedians. Stewart will host the second biannual "Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education" April 13 at the Beacon Theater Theatre in New York. (AP)

Griffin ordained
She's been a sitcom character, a sometime talk show host, and the centerpiece of her own reality show. Now Kathy Griffin has appeared in an unlikely new role - minister. She became ordained through an online church to officiate Saturday at the New York wedding of two fans, Brian Anstey and Elka Shapiro. "The request came in, and how could I say no?" Griffin, 47, told the Daily News. "I love that this couple just want to have fun. They're my kind of people." (AP)
