"Never Back Down" is the first widely released feature film to focus on the kind of ring combat that combines martial arts and other fighting techniques. Here's a quick glossary of terms to get you into the battle:

Mixed martial arts (MMA): an intense combat sport in which competitors use forms of fighting that include jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and others to their strategic and tactical advantage.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC): a leading mixed martial arts sports association, formed in January 2001.

Ultimate fighting: a proprietary term of the UFC for mixed martial arts competition between professional fighters in live events.

Sprawl and brawl, clinch fighting, ground and pound, submission grappling, lay and pray: techniques commonly used in mixed martial arts.
