Jim Carrey scored his biggest opening at the North American box office in almost five years as "Horton Hears A Who!" debuted at No. 1 with estimated weekend sales of $45.1 million. (It's the best opening for any movie this year, according to the Associated Press.) Carrey voices the title character in the computer-generated animated film, a rubbery elephant who stumbles upon a speck that happens to be a tiny planet, home to a city called Who-ville. Steve Carell voices the excitable mayor. Last weekend's champion, "10,000 BC," slipped to No. 2 with $16.4 million for the three-day period. Opening at No. 3 was "Never Back Down," a mixed martial arts movie targeted at young males. It earned $8.6 million. (Reuters)
Underwood joins Opry
Carrie Underwood (inset) will become the newest member of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry after she was invited Saturday to join the long-running country music show. Randy Travis extended the invitation as Underwood finished "I Told You So," a Travis song that Underwood recorded on her latest album. The former "American Idol" winner sold 7 million copies of her debut album, "Some Hearts." Underwood, 25, becomes the latest young hitmaker to become an Opry member in recent years, joining Brad Paisley, Josh Turne, and Dierks Bentley. (AP)Portrait of the artist
A British music scholar says he has identified a previously unknown portrait of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that could be worth millions. The 19-by-14-inch oil painting (right) shows the profile of a man in a bright red jacket. Cliff Eisen said that it is only the fourth known authentic portrait of Mozart from the time when the composer was at his professional height in Vienna. "This is arguably the most important Mozart portrait to be discovered since the composer's death in 1791," Eisen said in a statement that appeared on the website of King's College London, where he teaches music. The college said the portrait was probably painted by Joseph Hickel, who was a painter at Austria's imperial court. Hickel gave the portrait to Mozart in return for the composition of a serenade for a member of Hickel's family, the college said. (AP)© Copyright 2008 Globe Newspaper Company.
