The undead were alive and well at movie theaters as Woody Harrelson’s horror comedy “Zombieland’’ opened on top with $25 million, according to studio estimates yesterday. Sony scored a one-two punch with the animated family tale “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs’’ which took in $16.7 million, slipping to second-place after two weekends at No. 1. Taking a big bite of the family audience with $12.5 million was a double-feature reissue of Disney’s “Toy Story’’ and “Toy Story 2’’ in 3-D, which came in at No. 3. Playing for a limited two-week run, the double-feature sets the stage for the release next year of “Toy Story 3’’ in 3-D. The Warner Bros. comedy “The Invention of Lying,’’ with Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner, had a soft opening of $7.4 million, finishing at No. 4. Fox Searchlight’s roller-derby tale “Whip It,’’ featuring Ellen Page, Juliette Lewis, and Drew Barrymore, who also directed, made a weak debut at No. 6 ($4.85 million). Tied for sixth was Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story,’’ which expanded nationwide after a week in limited release. In limited release, Joel and Ethan Coen’s comic drama “A Serious Man’’ had a big opening with $251,510 in six theaters, averaging a whopping $41,918 per cinema (compared to an $8,235 average in 3,036 theaters for “Zombieland’’). Lohan debuts as Ungaro ‘artistic adviser’
The real show at Emanuel Ungaro’s spring-summer 2010 ready-to-wear display yesterday in Paris was not on the catwalk but backstage as journalists mobbed the label’s newly named artistic adviser, Lindsay Lohan. The flailing-but-storied fashion house announced the partnership about three weeks ago, after the last in a recent string of designers, Esteban Cortazar, resigned. He was replaced with young Spanish designer Estrella Archs and her adviser, Lohan, known more for her stints in rehab (three in 2007) than her design abilities. (That said, the “Freaky Friday’’ star has her own line of leggings called 6126). The collection was chock-full of more of the ultra-mini party girl dresses that have flooded Paris catwalks this season, but it also had some nice, wearable suits that harkened back to Ungaro’s heyday in the 1980s. Asked how their collaboration had worked, Lohan said, “We both kind of mixed our [ideas] together, and that’s why it came out so well.’’ (AP)

Reality show cast member’s ex-fiance killed
The former fiance of a cast member from “The Real Housewives of Atlanta’’ died Friday night after a fight outside an Atlanta strip club. Police spokesman James Polite said Fredrick Richardson was charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of Ashley “A.J.’’ Jewell, who died from massive head injuries after the fight in the parking lot of the Body Tap Club. Jewell was engaged to “Housewives’’ cast member Kandi Burruss until August. (AP)
