Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, who had a hit with “Swingers,’’ were tops at the weekend box office with their latest buddy pic, “Couples Retreat.’’ The comedy debuted with $35.3 million, while the low-budget fright flick “Paranormal Activity’’ leaped into the top 10. Shot for a reported $15,000, “Paranormal Activity’’ came in at No. 5, bringing in $7.1 million. “Couples Retreat’’ exceeded expectations for Universal Pictures, which had hoped the movie would top the $20 million range. “Zombieland,’’ the No. 1 movie the previous weekend, slipped to second with $15 million, raising its total to $47.8 million. Polanski 'depressed,' Swiss wary of bail
Director Roman Polanski is feeling depressed two weeks after his arrest in Switzerland to face US extradition for a 1977 case involving the rape of a 13-year-old girl, according to his lawyer. “I found him to be tired and depressed,’’ Herve Temime told the Sonntag newspaper, one of two newspapers he talked to after visiting the Oscar-winning director in a Zurich prison. The director of “Chinatown’’ and “Rosemary’s Baby’’ pleaded guilty in Los Angeles to having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977 and spent 42 days in prison undergoing psychiatric tests. He fled before the case was concluded because he believed a judge would sentence him to up to 50 years. Swiss officials have said they believe there is a very high risk of Polanski fleeing if he is released on bail. “He would fulfill all the conditions and stay in Switzerland until the extradition proceedings are decided,’’ said Temime. Slattery a mad man over garbage building
“Mad Men’’ star and Newton native John Slattery (inset) is none too pleased about a proposed $346 million sanitation department building in his Manhattan neighborhood. The actor, who plays advertising executive Roger Sterling on the hit AMC drama, is fighting plans for the new building on Spring Street. Officials say the project will get trucks off the street and into a garage and will provide the trucks direct access to the West Side Highway. The actor says neighbors are worried about pedestrian safety, with garbage trucks expected to add hundreds of visits to the neighborhood each day. A spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg told the New York Daily News the city plans to convert nearby space used by the sanitation department into parkland.

Kimmel dating a writer on his show
Following his breakup with Bedford, N.H., native Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Kimmel has a new flame. No, it’s not Ben Affleck. According to People.com, the host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!’’ is dating Molly McNearney, a longtime staffer on his ABC show. It developed “during work hours. . . . They keep things professional,’’ a source told People. McNearney, 31, joined the show as an assistant to the executive producer in 2003, began writing in 2006, and was promoted to her current position as co-head writer in 2008. Last year, Kimmel, 41, declared he was “(Bleeping) Ben Affleck’’ in a music video created as retaliation against a music video Silverman debuted called “I’m (bleeping) Matt Damon.’’
