FUNNY GAMES
(MAX on Comcast) Here’s Austria’s Michael Haneke (“Cache’’) with a shot-for-shot English-language remake of his 1997 experiment in arthouse sadism - a film in which two psychopaths (Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet) torture a family (led by Naomi Watts and Tim Roth) in ways meant to make a movie audience question its own movie bloodlust. The experiment fails (again) because Haneke’s really only interested in punishing us. (R; runs through Nov. 12) TY BURR
THE 6TH DAY
(TMC on Comcast) One of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, as he plays a family man nightmarishly forced to go up against his own clone and the biotech giant it rode in on. Tony Goldwyn is an entertainingly creepy heavy in this film calculated to allow Arnold to mete out just enough mayhem to give it some edge, but not so much that it’ll mobilize the anti-violence lobby.
