The age of cinema was just dawning when Anton Chekhov died in 1904. Author of hundreds of piquant stories and novellas, along with such impressionistic, twilit plays as “Uncle Vanya’’ and “The Cherry Orchard,’’ Chekhov chronicled the angst of the Russian middle class, the “lost generation’’ that would disappear after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.
