(Max on Comcast) Solid remake of the Victor Hugo perennial, delivered with handsome size and amplitude by Bille August, who smoothly blends an international cast headed by Liam Neeson as the fugitive convict Jean Valjean, trying to be a good man, and Geoffrey Rush as Javert, the obsessive, self-loathing police bulldog on his trail. FACE/OFF (HBO on Comcast) Imprisoned terrorist Nicolas Cage and covert agent John Travolta change places - and faces, identities, and worlds - in a film that turns into a nightmare when nobody will believe each is the other. John Woo directs this hyperkinetic, hyperviolent neo-Hong Kong ammofest with panache until his big budget weighs him down. But the acting is what counts here, and it’s double-barreled fun.
