The French director Joann Sfar, whose film, “Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life,’’ opens Friday, has examined the world from the inside out and, ultimately, concluded that outside is better than in. It’s therefore no wonder that the subject of Serge Gainsbourg appealed to him. The controversial French composer, singer, and actor was born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents in 1928. Sfar says he became enchanted with Gainsbourg as a child when he watched the provocateur’s boozy, profanity-laced performances.
