VELVET GOLDMINE (1998)
Todd Haynes’s fascination with the Ziggy Stardust glam rock glitterscape is both a strength and limitation of this always atmospheric, sometimes inaccessible drama, new to Blu-ray. With Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a fictionalized Bowie, Ewan McGregor as a fictionalized Iggy Pop, Christian Bale, and Toni Collette. Extras: Haynes (“I’m Not There’’) elaborates in a new commentary. (Lionsgate, $19.99)
THE ROCKETEER (1991)
Director Joe Johnston (“Captain America’’) takes an early swing at two-fisted, Nazi-busting patriotic adventure with this appealing, underrated comics adaptation, new to Blu-ray. With Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, and Alan Arkin. (Disney, $26.50)
THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: SEASON ONE (1991)
Prep for Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg’s animated feature with a cartoon series likewise adapted from the classic European comic strip. (Shout! Factory, $19.93; available now)
SHERLOCK HOLMES (1922)
Decades before Downey, John Barrymore offered his silent-film take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic sleuth in this hi-def debut. And from the same distributor: “The Artists: The Best of Kino’s Silent Classics Vol. 1,’’ featuring Barrymore’s “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde,’’ Valentino’s “Blood and Sand,’’ and more. (“Sherlock,’’ Kino, $34.95)
PREP & LANDING (2009)
For a variation on the “Arthur Christmas’’ paramilitary elves theme, check out Disney’s likable TV quick-hit from a couple of seasons ago. Another 20-minute diversion: “Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas Special.’’ (“Prep,’’ Disney, $19.99; “Ice Age,’’ Fox, $7.98; Blu-ray, $14.99. Both available now.)
