The week's sign of the Apocalypse
The great Dogme film "Celebration" -- come to think of it, the only great Dogme film -- is coming to Broadway. And Ali McGraw is in it. Details here. Photos of Ali then and now. See the difference? Neither can we.
Random House sent out paperback copies of "The DaVinci Code" to all the movie critics in the country a few weeks ago, and it's been amusing to go to screenings and see everyone -- the guy from the Herald, the guy from the Phoenix, the guy from the Worcester Telegram -- all reading the same book. And the Globe, too, since I'd been putting off buying it until the movie's May 19th release date drew closer. I also purposely blanked my mind as to the movie's cast -- other than Tom Hanks, who's been advertising "DaVinci" with his hair -- so I could envision the characters using my brain's own central casting. "Code" is a fun read, of course, and I zipped through it in a couple of days, noting that the gas ran out after author Dan Brown had spilled the Big Secret. Will director Ron Howard encounter the same structural problem? Judging from the latest trailer he's trying to patch it up with car chases and Paul Bettany in white pancake. Also, sorry, but if you really want to keep the audience wondering about the goodness or villainy of a certain character, you don't hire Ian McKellen. You just don't.
