Sundance '08: day one

Posted by Wesley Morris January 17, 2008 11:16 PM

Sundance's first day is a light one - the opening-night film is usually all there is. This year it's "In Bruges," the first film from the wicked Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as hit-men in Belgium. I hear it's good, but I couldn't bring myself to go. This opening-night movie, regardless of how good it is, suggests a lack of nerve on the festival's part. For one thing, it's scheduled to come out in the middle of February.

There's more philosophizing to do about the State of the Festival, but I'll wait until I actually see a movie first.
