So what have we learned from this year's Golden Globes, aside from the acute darts of snark launched by Wesley in this space last night and by Matthew in today's paper?

That Tracey Morgan should give every acceptance speech, fully loaded if necessary.

That "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan really had better come up with a more inspiring speech when he accepts the Oscar for Heath Ledger next month.

That Mickey Rourke should get a few more dogs, just in case this comeback thing doesn't pan out.

That it is, in fact, possible to win too many awards. Yes, you, Kate Winslet. (Fine, I'll give you the one for "Revolutionary Road," but your performance in "The Reader" over Viola Davis, Penelope Cruz, and Marisa Tomei? That just ain't right.)

That maybe now the multiplex masses will start going to see "Slumdog Millionaire" and pulsate along with the rest of us.

That where God has not given cleavage, Hollywood couture will provide. (See photo above.)

That Paul Giamatti has the right idea.

Honestly, I don't see the Oscars falling out terribly differently, but we'll see what the nominations say.

In box office news, Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" went way wide (from 84 theaters to 2,800) and landed on top of the box office pile with $29 million -- Clint's personal best for a national opening as director or actor. Newcomers "Bride Wars" and "The Unborn" both came in with $21 million; the former movie skewed heavily to women and might have been affected by withering reviews, while the latter benefited from being the rare horror film in the January crowd (and rated PG-13 at that). Down in limited-release land, big dogs are "Defiance" ($33K per-screen-average at two theaters), "The Wrestler" ($14K average at 60 sites) "Revolutionary Road" ($10.6K average at 134) and "Waltz with Bashir" ($10.1K average at 8).
