Sean and Mickey crash Boston

Posted by Ty Burr February 9, 2009 08:29 AM

Last night the Boston Society of Film Critics gave their annual awards at the Brattle, handing out commendations to local heroes like Stefanie Lubkowski and Kelley Teer, both recently departed from the Museum of Fine Art's film program; Paul Sherman, film critic and author of the essential reference work "Big Screen Boston"; longtime Harvard Film Archive projectionist, old school cineaste, and all-around class act Steve Livernash.

Then we gave awards for films, including best documentary, which went to the evening's feature film, "Man on Wire." Producer Maureen A. Ryan was present to introduce the film and spoke movingly of learning to love movies during her own Boston days, when she was a student at BC and came every weekend to the Brattle -- second row balcony center -- to absorb the greats on a big screen.

Oh, and Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke showed up, sort of. The two tied for best actor in the BSFC voting in December, and apparently they thought that was pretty cool and wanted to let us know. Up top is the video they sent us; it was shown last night to the Brattle audience. What I want to know is, if Rourke wins the Oscar, does the dog get an itty-bitty statue of its own?

  1. .....Two nut-jobs so absorbed with themselves.....this is celebrity-mania at it's best.....

Ty responds: I dunno, I think it's pretty sweet. They certainly didn't have to do this, and it's nice that they did.

  1. Can't we sneak in some law that keeps dictator loving Moonbats like Penn out of Massachusetts. We're already over our quota of Moonbats.

  1. CW, Penn and Rourke have been very close friends for over 20 years. Close friends can do that.

It is really cool that they don't let politics get in the way of their friendship. Penn is a very liberal Democrat and Rourke is a Republican. Congratulations to both of them. They are both very gifted actors and are deserving of this award and the Oscar.

  1. The Golden Globes and BAFTA got it right--Rourke rocks in "The Wrestler." The fact he didn't get the Oscar doesn't say much for the "esteemed" Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. This video shows what class acts both actors are.
