IFFB's lineup
The Independent Film Festival of Boston, this city's best general-interest film festival (yes "independent" is now general-interest), has announced its roster for 2010, running from April 21st to April 28th. Kevin Kline is scheduled to arrive for the opening-night film, "The Extra Man," which has a professorial escort for certain New York single ladies. He'll also receive the festival's career achievement award. James Franco's documentary, "Saturday Night," about a week in the life of "SNL," will bring the curtain down. And "Do It Again," starring the Globe's very own Geoff Edgers, will have its local premiere.
In addition to growing by a day, the festival is presenting its first jury prize, the Karen Schmeer Award for Excellence in Documentary Editing, which is named after the Boston-area film editor who died last year in a car accident. Awarding a non-fiction film for its editing is both so IFFB and so brilliant since what is often remarkable, if necessarily transparent, about so many good documentaries is their assembly. Shrewd editing is important to any movie but particularly crucial for documentaries, which tend of have hundreds of hours of footage and no script (officially anyway). Many non-fiction filmmakers say their movie was made in the editing process.
A full schedule has yet to appear to on the festival's site. But here it is.
