Thumbnail image for images.jpgThe US Postal Service keeps losing money, but its stamps keep getting more interesting -- and better designed. One reason for the design improvement is that it's using others' designs. In this case, the designers belong to Pixar. The USPS has issued a set of first-class stamps featuring an image each from the "Cars" movies, "Ratatouille," the "Toy Story" pictures, "Up," and "WALL-E."

Attractive as the Pixar stamps are, there's an even better-looking new series. It pays tribute to such industrial designers as Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey (who among other things designed the interiors for Radio City Music Hall), Russel Wright, and Norman Bel Geddes. Given the chance, imagine what those guys could have done with CGI. For that matter, imagine what the Pixar people could do with bakelite and brushed chrome.
