I would like to watch a movie tonight
in which a stranger rides into town
or where someone embarks on a long journey,

a movie with the promise of danger,
danger visited upon the citizens of the town
by the stranger who rides in,

or the danger that will befall the person
on his or her long hazardous journey?
it hardly matters to me

so long as I am not in danger,
and not much danger lies in watching
a movie, you might as well agree.

Billy Collins, from "The Movies," in "Sailing Alone Around the Room: New and Selected Poems"

(All right, "agree" gives the former Poet Laureate a rhyme for "me." But maybe it's not such an open-and-shut case as he'd want you to think. Plato, 2500 years ago, wanted to ban poets from his ideal republic. Were he around today, the smart money says he'd want to ban filmmakers, too -- and not without reason! He might feel otherwise, of course, if he ever saw a Theo Angelopoulos movie.)
