Advance tickets for 'The Dark Knight Rises' go on sale June 11

Advance tickets for "The Dark Knight Rises" go on sale at movie theaters nationwide Monday, June 11, according to an announcement on Twitter from Warner Bros. TV commercials for the upcoming Batman sequel are also announcing the June 11 ticket pre-sale date.

The last movie in the Batman trilogy will need to beat "The Avengers" with its $207.4 million opening weekend to be the box office record holder.

The second movie in the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale Batman trilogy, "The Dark Knight," nabbed a record-breaking $158.4 million during its opening weekend in 2008. It held the top spot of opening weekends until the last Harry Potter movie came out in 2011. In contrast, "Batman Begins" made $48.7 million.

Six months ago, fans in New York learned tickets to the July 19 "The Dark Knight Rises" midnight IMAX screenings had already sold out.

AMC theaters will begin selling tickets to their special Dark Knight marathon on June 11. Both "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" will screen July 19 leading up to the midnight premiere of the ”The Dark Knight Rises” on July 20.

"The Dark Knight Rises" will reportedly feature the most IMAX footage in a Hollywood feature, shot specifically with an IMAX camera. While "The Dark Knight" had 40 minutes of IMAX footage, “The Dark Knight Rises” will have more than an hour’s worth.

Tickets for local IMAX theaters in Natick and Reading go on sale June 11. Tickets to alternative IMAX-certified theaters will also go on sale then.
