The Rev. Christopher Hartley suggested filmmaker Bill Haney explore the conditions in which the members of his parish lived at the "bateyes," near the sugarcane fields in the Dominican Republic.

The resulting film, Haney's documentary "The Price of Sugar," was screened over the weekend at the Nantucket Film Festival and Provincetown International Film Festival.
