How could voters watch "The Messenger" and not see Foster's mesmerizing lead performance? The Oscar is Bridges' to lose, and it triples as a lifetime achievement award and a big wet kiss from all of us. That's fine, but - shhh - Renner's is the performance that haunts.

The real shock of "The Hurt Locker" was the thrilling confidence of its star. Jeremy Renner defusing bombs for the Army was something altogether new for the war movie: Steve McQueen as your cable guy. But it's futile: Jeff Bridges finally wins his Oscar. It's hard to separate the clichés of the part from the man transcending them. And I know it's a sin to ask, but as humane as his Mandela was: Morgan Freeman? There were so many less inevitable options.
