A tougher call: Hazanavicius is the leading contender, but don't ignore the possibility of voters throwing a bone to favorite son Scorsese. Allen has sentiment and a crowd-pleasing hit on his side, but great direction is not what "Midnight in Paris" is about.

Many directors are not auteurs, but just nice, determined people who want to tell a strong story. A few of the nominees this year reflect that. Hazanavicius's near-silent whimsy has charmed champions of his movie, but Malick went for something big, and whether or not it entirely worked for us, he achieved it.
